What is it that keeps us up at night? Or prevents us from falling asleep in the first place.
Of course the answer this question can be complex and there are a number of different factors ranging from biochemical ones, to mental / emotional ones.
For example, you've likely heard about the stress hormone cortisol. And what you may know (or not) is that if cortisol is elevated, it won't allow melatonin, which is our natural getting to sleep hormone, to increase. Elevated cortisol also won't allow GABA, which is one of our stay asleep hormones, to increase.
This is a biochemical imbalance that definitely will prevent our ability to get to sleep and stay sleep.
And there are definitely things we can do to change that biochemistry and my favourite is getting right to the root cause of the imbalance, and what I've found over the years is that biochemical imbalance isn't necessarily about biochemistry.
Just like I wanted my weight release to be strictly physiological, it turned out to be a nervous system attachment to trauma. And the same was true for my sleep issues. I was rampant insomniac for years until I got... yes... stay with me here... the stress out of my body.
So while we can definitely (and should) put in new behaviors to promote sleep hygiene, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation... we also... simply... need to get the stress out of our bodies.
