IN A MOOD TO BINGE?

Tenacity, Rest & Your Goals

Tenacity, Rest & Your Goals

November 12, 20249 min read

"We need to insert active rest into our days, projects, and the things that we're planning. Because rest is what allows the tenacity. It’s what will keep us determined and persistent." - Dr. Tonia Winchester

What does it really take to reach a goal? Well, I suppose first it takes knowing what the goal is. And what comes next? Obviously every goal will have different steps required to get there. What I’m really wondering is what is underneath that? What drives us? What starts the engine? What keeps us moving? What happens when we get bored or tired? These are the types of questions I’m getting curious about in this Episode of the Wonder with Me Podcast.

APPROXIMATE TRANSCRIPT

Today we get curious about both tenacity and rest. Aren't those opposites? As you’ll see in this post, I think they’re actually synergists. You can’t have one without the other.

This episode is a culmination of several different quotes that have reached me recently - all with the same take-home message.

As I grow, and mature I’m taking more responsibility for my own choices, behaviors, and results. I've been working on improving my financial health and well-being.

One of the money books that I’m applying is called Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. He's got this accounting system that’s really working for me. After the chapters of setting up the system implemented, he talks about how when we get into something and start to see the results that we're wanting, we often stop or slow down. We’ve got the thing!

But current Us got the thing because past Us took an action or series of actions. If we stop taking those actions, then future Us won't have the thing anymore.

As we're approaching success and reaching our goals, we have to keep going.

I see this with patients and clients where, especially when it comes to weight release, they start making progress towards their goals - their body composition starts shifting, they start building more lean muscle mass, releasing fat tissue…

… And then there's the birthday party.

They have one piece of cake, you know to not be rude. And it’s all spoiled.

They just immediately go back to how they were eating before and they reverse all of their results.

What a slippery and interesting slope. You might even see yourself in that same scenario.

Maybe in a different situation, but certainly you’ve done that where you're starting to make progress and then all of a sudden things are working, so you stop.

And in that moment what we really need to do is keep going. There’s actually 2 places where we have to keep going.

First when we’re succeeding. Keep going to maintain or enhance the success.

Second, we also have to keep going if we're not making progress and not noticing results because sometimes the thing that we want is just a couple steps away and we may not know how close we are.

Don't want to quit before the miracle happens. Obviously stop and assess… but keep going.

This brings us to the idea of TENACITY.

Let’s define it. According to Google:

The quality or fact of being able to grip something firmly.

The quality or fact of being able to be determined.

The quality or fact of continuing to exist, persistence.

Determination and persistence are needed to progress towards goals. We need both of these things when we’re starting out and we haven’t noticed any positive changes yet, and we also need it when we’re getting benefits so we keep getting those benefits.

In episode 48, I talked about metabolic workouts that harmonize our hormones and improve your metabolism - aka your body can burn fat even after the workout is done.

After that episode came out, a couple listeners reached out saying, “What is it?” It's called Metabolic Female, developed by a trainer and naturopathic doctor, Dr. Jay Teta. He has cracked the female hormone metabolic code. His workouts are 17 minutes long. The whole premise is you take whatever rest you want to take when you want to take it and for how long. He has all these soundbites like:

“Push until you can't, rest until you can.”

“Rest is success.”

When you do this you can work out more effectively and get these metabolic hormonal benefits. You set your own pace. You don't stop the video if you need to take a break, you just let it keep playing. If you have to miss a whole 45 second section, perfect. You take your own breaks. Rest is success.

But keep going as you're taking rest.

One of my earliest podcasts is called 20 Ways to Keep Calm And Prevent Burnout. It’s loaded with ideas for what I call Active Rest. Different from sleeping (passive rest), these are things we do in the day when we’re awake but have a positive benefit on reducing stress and keeping us calm.

It's active rest. We need to insert active rest into our days, projects, and the things that we're planning. Because rest is what allows the tenacity. It’s what will keep us determined and persistent.

This segues beautifully into the next quote by a mysterious graffiti artist called Banksy. He says,

“If you get tired, learn to rest, not to quit.”

This is that exact balance that I'm talking about. Having the persistence and tenacity to keep going, taking steps in the directions of what you want.

And if you get tired, don't give up. Take a rest.

Because when you rest, you’ll restore your ability to keep going.

Scheduling daily (or hourly) active rest moments help us face our challenges with more resilience, strength, and endurance.

There’s more. The founder and teacher of new clinical, conversational change work that I’m practicing (SHIFT SESSIONS), asks the question,

“What will your future self thank you for, from today?”

I talk about this in Episode 39  I talk about doing your future self all of the solids.

Here’s what you need to ask yourself:

What actions are you taking today, in combination with what rest you're claiming today, will your future self thank you for?

The next perfect influence comes from Steven Pressfield, author of The War of Art; a book about overcoming creative resistance. He says,

“We can't control the level of talent we've been given. We have no control over the nature of our gifts. What we can control is our self-motivation, our self-discipline, our self-validation, and our self-reinforcement. We can control how hard and how smart we work.”

What you can control is how you:

  • show up

  • grow up and take responsibility

  • lighten up

  • take a stand

  • take steps

  • change your perspective, attitude, position, relative to the world and your goals

  • And… how you rest.

And lastly somewhere I read that success isn’t about talent, it’s about tenacity. Your determination, your persistence, your ability to rest determines your success.

Whatever your goals are, (in your health, life, relationships, career, money):

What steps do you need to continually take?

How do you support those steps with active rest?

What do you need to do to keep going?

There is one more quote that I read after I’d recorded and edited this so I’ll wrap up by leaving this here:

"Decide whether or not the goal is worth the risks involved.

If it is, stop worrying…

The most difficult thing is the decision to act.

The rest is merely tenacity.

The fears are paper tigers.

The process can be its own reward.

Let it. Begin."

- Amelia Earhart
