How to Find Your Way Home To Your Self

"I somehow lost part of myself, a big part of myself. And it didn't happen instantaneously, and it didn't happen in way that I noticed. But over time, something was missing." - Coach Tonia

How do we lose track of what's important to us and who we are?

💓Strangely, my heart wasn't throbbing forcibly - at all - when I heard my speech coach say, “Okay, Tonia, whenever you're ready, take it away.” 

I looked right into the camera, saw my chest rise with a full breath, and began. 

I'm about to share a recent speech I gave in an online speaking club. 

I'm sharing this for two reasons.
One, because the information can help you reclaim parts of yourself that may feel like they're missing. 

Two, because it comes with a great story about setting and reaching goals. 

I've always seen myself in service to others on stages, sharing a message, maybe because I grew up dancing and performing. 

Now as an adult who feels incredibly clear about why I want to and how I can help, I've been moved to use my words to move others. To move them to better versions of themselves where you are healthier, happier and more satisfied in your life.

I knew I needed to learn some specific skills, so I signed up for two different speech coaching programs this past year. 

💪One of my goals was to refine my presentation style and skill set so that I could portray confidence while sharing my message. 

🏆I had a second goal. I wanted to be so self assured in my speaking abilities and my message, that I could present and create an impact with little to no preparation time. 

In the online speaking club we had ample notice to prepare a speech. Every 4-6 weeks we were scheduled as speakers, and the meeting two weeks before that we were on call as “reserve speakers” in case one of the scheduled speakers couldn’t make it that day. 

This particular day the order was like this: 

  1. Speaker 1 - not Tonia

  2. Speaker 2 - not Tonia

  3. Speaker 3 - not Tonia

  4. Reserve Speaker 1 - not Tonia

  5. Reserve Speaker 2 - not Tonia

  6. Reserve Speaker 3 - Tonia

The chances of me having to give a speech that day were very slim - three people would have to cancel and not present that day. I’m sure you see where this is going. 

Two weeks prior to this specific date, I’d emailed my instructor and told him that my next speech would be my last in the club, because I was ready to leave the nest, feeling like I had gotten what I wanted and needed out of the program. 

💡In that email I told him that I had been carrying around this funny story from 20 plus years ago that I had finally figured out how to align it to my work, so that it could be useful and helpful for my audience. 

🧠His mind interpreted my excitement in an interesting way. In this meeting when he realized that 2 scheduled speakers and 1 of the reserve speakers weren’t coming, he said, “I know that you’re ready to present today, Tonia.” 

And the truth is… I wasn’t. Beyond the idea stage I had done zero preparation. 

I had no structure. No magic phrases. No intention. No plan. 

🙃And so obviously I assertively replied, “Yep! I’m good to go.” 

During the first hour of the meeting, the instructor, a Scottish Toast Masters champion, teaches and gives us exercises to practice. Then we take a 15 minute break, and proceed with the speeches. 

Over my break, I quickly released the contents of my bladder and then got to work. I briefly mapped out the order and key transition points and came up with an overall intention for the 10 minute speech. 

🦴I had the bones but I had no flesh, blood vessels, or soft tissue. 


🥩I just trusted that those things would fill in as I went, hoping that I could truly be in the moment with my words to adequately get across what I wanted to share. 

This is the speech that tumbled out of me as I looked right into the camera, saw my chest rise with a full breath, and began.

And that’s exactly what I do.

I offer people tools to reprogram their thinking so that they can find their way back home to themselves. And there are three things that I offer them to make this easy:

  1. I guide them through simple and gentle techniques that clear out the painful imprint of the past.

  2. I encourage them and show them how important it is to focus on what they want.

  3. I coach them to take action towards who it is they want to be, what they want to do, and what they want to have.
