"What's hard is the leap that we have to make inside our unconscious mind, that allows us to get to the other side of this chasm where we can say, 'Yes, today is the day that I'm going to take care of myself. And yes, tomorrow is also going to be the day that I take care of myself. And the day after that, I'm really going to do my darndest then too." - Dr. Tonia Winchester

This episode is a retrosode, where I revisit old blog posts to reflect on how far I’ve come and see if any of that old content is still valuable. This one was published on June 2, 2013.
To summarize both the original post and this podcast:
Self-love kept showing up as a common topic which prompted me to dig up an old article I wrote in naturopathic college, originally posted in the student newspaper. The piece is about success, failure, and unconditional love for oneself and others.
This topic is personal for me, connected deeply to my dad who passed away a couple of years ago.
In my second year at naturopathic college, my perfect academic record took a hit—I failed three midterms. I was scared to tell my parents but found the right moment during an online chat with my dad. His response shocked me. He said, “Maybe you're not getting enough exercise. It's all about balance, sweetie.” He didn't mention the marks at all but reassured me of their unconditional love.
This made me realize that while I aimed to show unconditional love to my patients, I wasn't giving that same love to myself. Instead of saying, “Good try, Tonia,” I was critical of myself.
Why is it so hard for us to love ourselves unconditionally? Our self-perception affects every aspect of our lives. There are no benefits to selling ourselves short.
As a health educator and doctor, I've learned that the best way to teach self-care is by example. It's not just about eating well or exercising but also about being kind to ourselves.
If you fall or fail, just try again. Start now by looking in the mirror and telling yourself that you deeply and unconditionally love yourself.
Reflecting on this post shows how my interests as a naturopathic doctor led me into mind-body healing and coaching. This journey has even resulted in writing two books: Breakthrough the Insomnia Cycle and Thinking Kindly.
People often find it hard to take care of themselves because they struggle with self-love and acceptance. Neuro-linguistic programming helped me assist others in overcoming these barriers.
So remember, it's all about balance: practicing good behaviors and removing obstacles to healing.
My clients are people stuck in their health or lives with burnout, insomnia , anxiety, or stress. After working with me they can calm their minds, sleep deeply, and find joy and energy again - all with out talk therapy or medications.
